Edgemead Library news on maintenance, book clubs & activities

JULY16-05

Afrikaans crime author, Martin Steyn, visited the Edgemead/Monte Vista Library on 29 June.  Library users were very pleased to meet him and Principal Librarian Lorraine Mathewson said she predicts that Martin will soon be mentioned in the same breath as Deon Meyer and Rudi Van Rensburg. “We had a delightful morning with this gentle tall man,” added Lorraine.

The major maintenance at Edgemead/Monte Vista Library is nearing an end with the library having opened its’ doors again late June.

The Edgemead/Monte Vista Library will be hosting their Christmas in Winter “coffee morning” on the 5th of August.  And all are welcome to attend.  They have made special mention to extend this invitation to the men of the community as well as very few attend and they hope to see more male visitors at the next one.

The Friends of the Edgemead Monte Vista library will be holding Car boot sales on the first and last Saturdays of each month, with the exception of December and January. The next ones will take place on 30 July, 6 August and 27 August. (Please note that they are not every Saturday, only every first and last Saturdays of the month.)

The Friends are hosting their winter craft market inside the library a little later than usual from 15 to 30 July during library open hours. More than 40 crafters will have goods on display to buy.

There has been a lot of confusion regarding the allocation of funds raised by the Friends of the Library. To clarify, the Friends paid for the alterations to the library desk and, during May, spent more than R20,000 on new books and dvd’s for the library and therefore for the community it serves. “We cannot thank them and our volunteers enough for all their hard work and dedication,” said Principal Librarian Lorraine Mathewson.

There are now three book clubs at the library: one meets on every first Tuesday morning of the month, there is a meeting once a month on a Saturday and they now also have an Afrikaans book club which will meet once per month once it has been properly established.

There is also a need for a teenage book club. The Edgemead/Monte Vista Library are all calling on interested teenagers to contact the library.
