The City of Cape Town advises residents that overall water consumption since the imposition of Level 3 restrictions is still 10% above the savings target of 800 million litres per day. In order to protect our water resources, residents have been asked to keep their water consumption over the coming summer months in line with their consumption over winter.

Residents who would like to save water could consider harvesting rainwater or installing a borehole or water-well provided they register these with the City. This investment will also result in savings for residents in the long-run. In addition to adhering to restrictions, residents can also employ the following tips in their homes:

  • Ensure that washing machines or dishwashers have a full load before running them
  • Rinse dishes and vegetables in a basin of water rather than under a running tap, and reuse the water for pot plants or in the garden
  • Reuse rinse water for the next cycle of washing up
  • Thaw frozen foods in the fridge, at room temperature, in a basin of water, or in a microwave rather than placing them under running water
  • When using taps, don’t let the water run down the drain while waiting for the hot water or for the water to cool. Rather collect the water in a bottle
  • Close the tap when brushing your teeth
  • Plug the sink when shaving rather than rinsing your razor under running water
  • Shower rather than taking a bath – a half-filled bath uses 113 litres of water, while a five-minute shower uses about 56 litres
  • Install a water-saving showerhead, take shorter showers, don’t run the water at full force, and turn off the shower when soaping
  • Reuse bath water in your garden
  • Install a new water-saving toilet
  • Check if your toilet is leaking. Furthermore, residents can place a 2-litre bottle filled with sand into their cistern to reduce the amount of water used with each flush
  • Ensure that gardens do not require large amounts of water to maintain

We encourage residents to familiarise themselves with these restrictions and display them prominently in their homes.

My Viewpoint

Here we are at the end of another year and as we enter the silly season and the madness this time of year brings, it makes me think.

I wonder how many people work themselves into a frenzy and a state of craziness when in actual fact there is no need.  Life ticks by minute by minute, second by second, whether you are calm or whether you are frenzied.  Nothing changes, so why do we bother?

The shop will still be there, the sky, the sea, the road, irrespective of what our current state of mind is.

I have decided that it is not worth it.  Rather take a deep breath, relax and take one step at a time.

Decorate your Christmas tree if that is your tradition, wrap presents and breathe.  Go about each day as if there is more than enough time and you will be amazed that there will actually be more than enough time.  This might sound a bit crazy, but try it – you will be amazed that a calm day with endless hours will result in exactly that.

We really create our own stress and I think – well I for one think that as we near the end of this year we should start the New Year with a new outlook and a new way of doing things.

After all, we cannot keep doing the same thing and then expect a different result.  In order to change the outcome, we need to change the preceding action.

Food for thought, as always, I hope.

New De Grendel Subcouncil Chair

Newly-elected Subcouncil 3 chairperson, Helen Carstens says she will work towards a vibrant and approachable Subcouncil that is ready to serve and assist.

Councillor for Ward 5, Edgemead and Bothasig, Carstens was re-elected in the elections in August and now elected on 15 November as Subcouncil chair.

“I am grateful to the Subcouncil staff who have tirelessly managed the Subcouncils, under much duress at times, to keep them operational during this phase,” said Carstens, “I would like to have an open-door policy and I look forward to engaging with the different communities.”

Subcouncil 3 covers 6 wards and a number of ward and proportional councillors.  Wards included are Wards 1, 4, 5, 70, 107 and 113.  This is an increase of wards and councillors from what Subcouncil 3 had prior to the elections and the changing of boundaries.

Cllr Carstens says she is up to the challenge and is looking forward to what the new position will bring.

Edgemead Primary celebrates EPSKindness in November

Edgemead Primary celebrated #EPSKindness from 1 – 11 November. During this time, each grade was responsible to “wrap” a tree, and learners were encouraged to decorate a cut-out of their hand, which was stuck along the school passages as a visible reminder that kindness is something one DOES. Edgemead Primary encouraged families to perform Random Acts of Kindness during this time and had wonderful feedback from their learners.

The #Truper Campaign coincided with their campaign and the following learners were recognised for their kind contributions:

Sikho for his constant willingness to help and his compassionate behaviour. Daniel for lending his new shoes to a friend who had forgotten his, then wearing his older ones for the day. Tamsin for the efforts she has made in collecting bottle caps and bread tags that go towards buying a wheelchair for those that need it. Tamsin spends many weekends collecting bottle caps and bread tags from the beach  cleaning it up as she goes along!

Edgemead Primary School also managed to contribute 140 Santa Shoeboxes this year and the other items collected that didn’t make it into shoeboxes were donated to an organisation that does charity work with young people.

Holiday Programme at Edgemead Monte Vista Library

“The Edgemead Monte Vista Library has had a very busy year once again. “We as a staff are extremely grateful for every volunteer that pitches in and helps us to keep the library in the condition it is. We have our group of book menders, shelvers, cd- and dvd cleaners and just people generally assisting with functions and wherever the need might be,” said Head Librarian Lorraine Mathewson.

She added that without the Friends of the Edgemead/Monte Vista library they will also not be the dynamic team that they are. The Friends have various fund raising initiatives e.g. art exhibitions, car boot sales and craft markets. With the funds raised, the Library is able to buy some extra best sellers and fill most of their other fund gaps. Mrs Mathewson said that she would like to say a huge “Thank you” to Friends of the Library Chairperson Ms Diane Stratton and her team! Just a reminder that membership for the Friends of the Library can once again be paid from January at the library.

“We also want to thank all the people in the community who donate books to the library. On an annual basis we select more than 1000 of these items to become part of our library stock. Good books which we have enough copies of, we donate to less fortunate libraries in the City of Cape Town,” said Mrs Mathewson. Read more


At this time of the year many companies across South Africa will be hosting end-of-year functions for their staff. While these are festive, celebratory occasions, the Automobile Association (AA) urges all motorists to remember that alcohol and driving do not mix, and that alternatives are available to drivers who want to drink at these events.

According to figures published by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) the most fatalities on South African roads occur on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays between 5pm in the evening and 10pm at night. The AA said these periods are significant and clearly coincide with times of increased drinking, when the risk is higher.

“It’s become somewhat of a ritual at this time of year to warn drivers of the dangers of drinking and driving. But, unfortunately, the message appears to be lost as many people still insist on drinking and driving, not only endangering their lives, but those of other road users,” said the AA.

The AA noted that traffic authorities around the country have been clear that they are increasing their activities and that more checks, and roadblocks, are commencing.

“There really is no excuse for drink driving nowadays. There are many take-me-home services available, including AA Designated Driver (, which are reliable, affordable and safe. We urge anyone who is going to be drinking to consider these options before getting behind the wheel themselves. Companies hosting year-end events must also take responsibility and not allow workers who have been drinking to drive home,” the AA said. Read more

Edgemead, Celebrate your Multi-Award Winning Lions Club – De Grendel

Additionally other club members ran a fruit juice stall at Huis Horizon, Stellenbosch on the same day for mentally disabled occupants. Their profits raised were approximately R350 000.


It is not always possible to experience or recognise deserved achievements, especially, when applicable to others.

Here we think of the U.K soccer league, for example: when Manchester United wins, then the supporters associate themselves with the success and “we won!” rings out from every corner, but when they lose the comments are generally a case of “they played like a crowd of clueless idiots.”

Now to contextualise the achievements of the De Grendel Lions Club, it could be likened to sitting at your child’s school prize giving and having your child / his friend being named as a top scholar in, for example, the English subject. Later on the same name is repeated for mathematics and even later also receiving the top prize for science. Amazingly the same scholar has been awarded three top prizes recognising his/her dedication and application.

Imagine then the feelings of the De Grendel Lions Club when, at the Lions mini convention held on 28 October at the Portuguese Club in Rugby, attended by the 42 clubs in the district of 410A, that the De Grendel Lions Club president Patrick Pillay was called up to the roster on 6 occasions to receive 6 top awards. I repeat 6 top awards!  Including the coveted trophy for LIONS CLUB OF THE YEAR 2015  2016.

Residents, your Lions Club continues to do you proud with their hardworking, dedicated members who serve the elderly; youth; handicapped, blind and deaf people; local indigent members of our society and our environment. Small wonder that many people in our area wish to learn about the workings of Lions Clubs in general and the local Lions Club De Grendel in particular.  To meet this need the Lions Club De Grendel are preparing an updated club information Brochure that they hope to have available at all of their clubs holiday activities in the area.

The De Grendel Lions Club wish all the readers and their families a Happy, Holy Christmas and best of luck for the New Year on behalf of all the Club Members.  We would thank you for the continued support that enables us to help people in need.

Councillor’s Corner

Dear Residents

I am happy to report that the Bothasig CDC, formerly Bothasig Clinic, is moving along at full speed.  I am grateful for all the positive feedback received and am very happy that so many are now able to access a variety of services on their doorstep.

As we look to the end of another year, we also look to the promise of a new year and there are indeed exciting things the City has planned.  The first would be the Organisational Development Plan that will among others, see a new level of service delivery rolled out.  Due to roll out in January, we will see service delivery being localised and brought closer to the community.  The localised elementary service delivery will attend to among others, water leaks, electricity faults, potholes and other residential service issues.  This is a new approach that is sure to bring about a faster response time and I am indeed looking forward to this.

As we wind down at this time of year, it is usually the time that dumping and littering increases, and I urge residents to do so within the ambient of the law.  It is very easy to use one of the City’s green bins but be mindful that it will look full and untidy for a number of days until it is emptied.  Likewise, dumping on our open fields will also leave the area untidy.

I would further like to remind residents of the City’s Give Responsibly drive.  Especially at this time of year, our hearts go out to those less fortunate than ourselves.  It is worthwhile to bear in mind that when we give handouts to one and all, we are encouraging and enabling them.  It is not helping or uplifting.  What this does, is keeps them in this situation with no need or motivation to improve as their needs are met in their current situation.  There are many shelters and organisations that assist and help, and places like hospices that will come to you and fetch what you have.

Recycling is also a key aspect that we really need to take more seriously.  There are so many options available in our area, even the option of collection from our homes.

Another aspect that has previously been mentioned is that of house numbers.  At this time of year when an emergency can easily happen, it is important that emergency services are able to easily locate your house.

I would like to stress to residents to be extra vigilant at this time of year when crime generally increases.  Please report anything suspicious to the SAPS and do become involved in your neighbourhood watch.
